Matt Sargent, an actor and stand-up comedian, is the creator behind Cleethorpes’ latest attraction, Escapologist – a series of themed rooms where teams have to solve puzzles in order to escape.

What Escapology needed

Matt was inspired to open escape rooms after experiencing the attraction whilst on holiday, believing it would make a great addition to the area’s leisure offering. Matt would be starting the whole process from scratch and so reached out to E-Factor for assistance.

How E-Factor helped

E-Factor Business Advisors, Julie Sweeney and Steve Parker, were on hand to support Matt from the very beginning. Julie assisted in creating business plans, whereas Steve developed cashflow reports. The E-Factor Business team also helped Matt with the property search, and set up a successful meeting with Jane Cusse of Finance for Enterprise, who was able to secure funding via a start-up loan. This capital has been put towards the whole refurbishment of the space, including new windows, walls and decoration, CCTV and the puzzles themselves.

The Result

Escapologist opened to the public in August 2018. Matt’s goal was to create a whole experience for visitors, and so the premises has six themed escape rooms, including a puzzle room for children and ones designed with hen and stag parties in mind. You will also find a bar area and reception area.

Matt Sargent said: “The more we looked into it, the more we realised that this could work. We considered opening the escape rooms in Louth, but Cleethorpes was our first choice. It’s just a short walk from St Peter’s Avenue and we’re so close to the seafront. Already we’ve had a lot of interest, especially on Facebook, and it’s all been very positive.

“First we created an action plan with Julie Sweeney, then we got through to the loan stage with Jane, and we’ve been cracking on with it ever since. The loan we’ve received is being used on every part – the walls, new windows, CCTV, everything. They’ve been very supportive.”
